Well water testing
Testing your well water regularly is essential because private wells are not regulated by the federal government, making homeowners responsible for their own water safety
. At a minimum, experts recommend annual testing for coliform bacteria and nitrates.
Recommended Testing Schedule
Routine testing helps establish a historical record of your water quality, which can be critical if nearby activities later damage your supply. NC State Extension Publications
- Annually (Spring is best): Test for coliform bacteria, nitrates, pH levels, and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS).
- Every 2–3 Years: Test for lead, arsenic, iron, manganese, chloride, and hardness.
- Immediate Testing: If you notice changes in taste, odor, or color, or after flooding, heavy rainfall, or well repairs.
